I’ve been watching episode after episode after episode of Kitchen Nightmares lately.
I powered my way through the UK version and now I’m onto the American reprise.
You can blame the intense curiosity I have in all things food and cooking. You can blame the addiction to Chopped and Sweet Genius, brought on by ‘together time’ with My American.
You can blame Gordon Ramsay. That dude is hot. Come on, you know it’s true.
More than that, he’s honest.
Outright, bald-faced, balls-out honest.
Full disclosure: I didn’t like him at first. Especially Hell’s Kitchen, the way he yelled and swore and bitched out people.
And now … after watching episode after episode after episode of Kitchen Nightmares and a season of MasterChef, I see the truth.
He’s passionate. And he cares.
Ramsay — who, God bless his heart, takes his shirt off in almost every episode of the UK Kitchen Nightmares (America, what are you thinking in not letting him?) — inspires restaurateurs, chefs, hosts and wait staff to be the very best they can be.
He’s not always the nicest person about it.
But that’s who he is.
It’s about tough love and altering behaviour by showing them the consequences of that behaviour.
Losing the business. Going bankrupt. Giving up their homes for the sake of the restaurant.
Isn’t that what we all really and truly need sometimes? A good solid kick in the ass?
I know I’ve needed one or two over the course of my lifetime. OK … several. Complacency is easy. Giving up is the quick way out.
Trying is hard.
Making the tough choices is difficult.
Really showing what you can do and putting yourself out there aren’t easy.
It takes effort. And that’s what Gordon Ramsay demands. No matter which TV show he’s hosting.
He wants your best.
He wants your 100% (oh hell no, I’m not going to say 110 like a bad cliche).
He wants it all.
Like legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi said:
I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, his greatest fulfilment of all he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle … victorious
I know who my Gordon Ramsay is. She’s been my colleague, my rival, my confidante, my friend. She knows me better than any person on the planet. And I’m not afraid to reach out to her when I know I need a solid kick in the ass.
